Nada Alwadi of Bahrain is a senior journalist and editor at Alwasat daily newspaper where she covers parliamentary sessions and politics. She wishes to explore the role media plays in improving women’s lives in the U.S as well as learn about new media technologies.
Utku Cakirozer of Turkey is a foreign correspondent with Milliyet newspaper's capital bureau in Ankara. He also covers defense, and national politics with special emphasis on political reforms. During his Humphrey year, he would like to concentrate on online and interactive journalism.
Gibbs Dube of Zimbabwe is a seasoned journalist and a journalism instructor at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo. He is the founding editor of The Weekly Times. He wishes to concentrate on media and democracy, and investigative reporting as well as work on launching a new community driven weekly publication focusing on socio-economic, democratic and political issues in Zimbabwe.
Grace Githaiga of Kenya is the executive director of EcoNews Africa, a sub-regional NGO dedicated to disseminating information about sustainable development and influencing policy formation. She is currently the President of the World Association of Community Broadcasters. She plans to focus on how community media can be strengthened to influence national policy and international negotiations.
Tomi Haryadi of Indonesia is a press officer for the World Health Organization in Indonesia. Previously, he worked as a print journalist for a national daily newspaper, Media Indonesia, specializing in social welfare issues. During his Humphrey year, he would like to focus on how public relations officials and journalists can collaborate to improve dissemination of reliable information to the public.
Allazam E. Issaka of Chad is a telecommunications engineer with Radio Broadcasting of Tchad. Previously he worked as a telecommunications engineer for Esso-Tchad. In his Humphrey year, he would like to focus on technology policy and management, and implementation of technology policy in public administration.
Svetlozar Kirilov Ivanov of Bulgaria is an associate professor of Sociology and Media at Sofia University. He serves as a media expert in the Council of Europe and takes part in designing media policy at the European level. He would like to focus on the role of media in resolution of ethnic, religious, and racial conflicts.
Dewan Mahmud of Bangladesh is a senior reporter with The Daily Prothom Alo, the largest daily newspaper in Bangladesh. In 2008, he was awarded the Best Investigative Reporter of the Year by UNESCO’s country office. During his Humphrey year, he wishes to enhance his journalism skills in the areas of public and corporate corruption, capital markets, foreign investment and political economy.
Rosangela Malachias of Brazil is a journalist and a consultant at the University of Sao Paulo’s Race Development and Social Inequality Program. She is also the founder of the Media, Ethnicity, Communication and Education group. In her Humphrey year, she would like to explore areas of communication, education, leadership and diversity with an emphasis on black women and youth.
Jaffar Mjasiri of Tanzania is an investigative reporter with the Tanzania Standard Newspapers, Daily News. He would like to improve his investigative reporting skills and is interested in media management.
Luisa Peirano of Uruguay the director of International Affairs at the University of Montevideo. Her field of study is journalism history. She wishes to improve her skills as a historian and biographer during her Humphrey year.
Eitan Prince of South Africa is a lecturer in radio at the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies. His teaching interests are in radio news and current affairs. In his Humphrey year, he wishes to study the potential of hip hop music and culture to bring about social change.
Luisa F. Rodriguez of Guatemala is a journalist at Prensa Libre, a daily newspaper, where she covers politics and migration issues. She would like to study political decision-making in U.S. institutions dealing with migration.
Phuntsho Wangdi of Bhutan is the editor of Kuensel newspaper. He would like to focus on the study of democratic processes, reporting on government and politics and improving his journalistic skills.
