WASHINGTON - Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, R-Frederick, will lobby against the House Democrats' health care reform bill with other House Republicans outside the Capitol Thursday. The lawmakers expect to be joined by a large crowd of like-minded protesters. "The whole Congress is going crazy," said Bethesda resident Marietta Falzgraf. O'MALLEY INDEPENDENTS
ANNAPOLIS - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley's biggest weakness for reelection next fall is among independent voters, according to a new poll by the Clarus Research Group. Though O'Malley maintains steady approval ratings just under 50 percent and holds a 7 percentage point lead over former Gov. Robert Ehrlich in a hypothetical matchup, voters are largely unsatisfied with his handling of the economy and he must find a way to reassure Marylanders that the government is doing all it can to survive the national recession, according to the poll. OZONE COMMISSION
BALTIMORE - Representatives from the 12 states and the District of Columbia that make up the Ozone Transport Commission, a group that includes Maryland and advises the EPA on reducing ozone pollution in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, told the agency Thursday that stricter national guidelines need to be implemented in order to cut down on air pollution in the region. They said most pollution in their states comes from neighboring states that are not as aggressive about tackling pollution levels. Slug: CNS-Ozone Commission. About 550 words.
