Graduate Programs
Masters Program
Maryland's masters program is a one-year program culminating in a Master of Journalism degree (non-thesis) or Master of Arts (thesis). Students select one of four specializations offered by the College: Public Affairs Reporting for those interested in print journalism, Broadcast News for students preparing for careers as TV news correspondents, anchors or producers, Online Journalism for students planning careers as editors and producers for news Web sites, and the Returning Journalist track for newsroom veterans who enroll in a highly individualized course of study. The masters program is designed to be completed in 12 months.
Doctoral Program
Maryland's Ph.D. in Journalism and Public Communication is designed to prepare students for careers in university teaching, academic and industry research, and media consulting. The first two years of the program consist of coursework in theory, research methods, journalism and an outside area of interest. Students then conduct research and write the disseration. Most successful candidates enter the program with a masters degree, but that requirement can be waived for people with extensive professional news experience. See the Ph.D. program requirements and suggested course of study, as well as Professor Haynes Johnson's perspective on the program's mission.
