Welcome!

The Maryland-District of Columbia Scholastic Press Association is a non-profit association headquartered at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park. It offers opportunities to advisers and students to continue the journalistic tradition of excellence in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area. MSPA has a strong interest in scholastic free press issues, in supporting the rejuvenation of defunct journalism programs and in strengthening existing programs at area middle and high schools. Membership is free and available to all teachers and student staffs. Email MSPA President Gary Clites at gclites@verizon.net to join.

  • The MSPA Summer Journalism Programs for students and advisers at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park.
  • The Annual Fall Convention featuring workshops, tours and speakers.
  • The Regis Boyle Scholarship for beginning publications advisers.
  • A publication critique and awards program.
  • Individual writing and editing awards for student journalists.
  • The Adviser, a newsletter for journalism advisers.
  • Professional support for journalism teachers, advisers and staffs including lobbying for the rights and educational status of scholastic journalists.
