2007 Program Offerings

Aspiring Journalists
Learn the basics of good journalism and have fun doing it. Middle school students will be exposed to the world of journalism. Enrollment restricted to middle school students (6th to 8th graders) during the 2007-2008 school year.

Desktop Publishing and Page Design Fundamentals
Learn design principles and telling stories through visuals. Explore the basics of layout, copy and art placement, headlines, photography, typography and graphics. All levels of experience welcome.

Beginning News Writing
Get introduced to ledes, basic story structure, interviewing techniques and journalistic style—everything you need to know to start writing for your school newspaper. No experience necessary.

Advanced News Writing
Helps experienced high school journalists develop a more sophisticated writing style, improve interviewing techniques and cultivate story ideas.

Copy Editing NEW!!
Excellent copy editing is essential in any publication. Learn skills and tips for spotting errors, sharpening stories, writing headlines that catch the reader's attention and being the last line of defense for accuracy.
All levels of experience welcome.

Sports Writing
Create the kind of sports coverage you love to read! Helps sports columnists, beat reporters and editors improve reporting and editing, including techniques for interviewing coaches and athletes, and for covering games.

Poetry Writing
Enjoy a week of writing verse, studying great poets, improving your techniques and sharing words with others. Great for students with a passion for poetry.

Photojournalism
Learn the basic of great photos and making photos work in print. Students will plan and execute a photo assignment. Each student must bring a digital camera.

Television Production
The Philip Merrill College of Journalism’s state-of-the-art broadcast facility is the perfect place for a budding Katie Couric or Matt Lauer to get exposed to the ins and outs of producing a television news program—both in front of and behind the camera.

Newspaper Editors-in-Chief Program
Newspaper editors-in-chief face many responsibilities and challenges, and this program is designed to help you prepare for and navigate through your year in charge. Topics include managing a newsroom, developing an editorial policy, organizing and motivating staff, fostering a strong relationship with your adviser, handling legal and ethical issues, and dealing with advertising and fundraising. Enrollment restricted to students who will be editor-in-chief of their high school newspaper during the 2007-2008 school year.

*Students enroll in one course for the entire week.
*Fees listed are for tuition only. Students are responsible for lunches, notebooks, pens, and other typical class supplies.
*For an additional fee, rising juniors and seniors, for the 2007-2008 school year, may reside in on-campus housing

Space Availability
Space is limited and enrollment in program offerings will be done in the order in which completed registration forms are received.
On-Campus Housing
Restricted to rising 11th and 12th graders for the 2007-2008 school year. Space is limited. Late registrants should inquire to determine space availability.
Program Offerings
Content of program offering subject to change, and program offering subject to cancellation if fewer than 9 students enroll in a particular program.
Course Waitlist
A waitlist may be available for selected program offerings. Inquire with Marchelle Payne-Gassaway to determine waitlist availability.
Age/Grade Requirement
Enrollment limited to rising 9th graders through rising college freshmen, except for the middle school program. The middle school program is restricted to middle
school students (6th to 8th graders) during the 2007-2008 school year.
Program Hours
Daily hours are 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
