Merrill Takes Most First-Place
Awards
in SPJ Mark of Excellence Regional Competition

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—
Students of the Philip Merrill
College of Journalism at the University of Maryland took
home more first-place awards in the Region 2 Society
of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence competition
than any other school in the region. The results, announced
at Saturday’s regional SPJ conference in Richmond,
Va., included 11 first place honors, 10 second and four
third.
The nods included work in online news and features,
television production and reporting and radio programs.
The campus independent student daily newspaper, The
Diamondback, placed second in all-around excellence.
This year’s competition saw more than 3,300
entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions.
First place winners will advance to the national competition,
with winners to be announced in mid-May and awarded
at the organization’s national convention in
September. This year’s SPJ National convention
will be held in Washington, D.C.
